Free Home Recreation Guide: Social

In this ‘Home Recreation Guide,’ I dive into 5 domains of wellness and talk about different recreation activities that are fulfilling to each domain. In this post, I will be sharing about social wellness.

Social wellness focuses on your relationship with others. There are many ways to do this and they can contribute to your overall well-being by providing a felt sense of belonging, connection, support and so much more.

Now more than ever we need to connect! We may be told to physically distance ourselves, but let's remain socially connected!

My Seven Recommendations:

1. Call a Friend/Loved One

It is the simplest of things that can connect us. A friend or loved one appreciates a phone call, this reminds them that you are thinking about them.

2. Play a Game Virtually

Play a Game Over Video Call

Be creative! Play a conversation game over the phone, ask them what they would like to do turn to turn over if playing a board game, or play an online game while video chatting!

Bring back the childhood nostalgia and connect with friends while playing Club Penguin!

Play Online Video Games

As many of us already do, connecting with others while playing video games brings light to the sense of community and some joking banter.

The popular game, Dominion has now released a new online version!

Missing your D&D hangs with your friends? Have them virtually!

Play popular board games with people online or invite friends to play board games with you! To name a few Stone Age, Sushi Go, and more!

3. Play a Conversation Starter Game:

Quarantine adaptation: over video chat, over a phone call, using an app, or with the people in your household

Game Ideas:
1. The Art of Conversation
2. Table Topics
3. Two Truths and a Lie
4. This or That
5. Would You Rather

Apps to Keep us Connected:
1. HouseParty(this has built in games)
1. Facebook Messanger (there is also now a kids version)
2. Facetime
3. Google Hangouts
4. Whatsup
5. Zoom
6. Skype

4. Have a Virtual Movie Night

Have someone screen share the movie and watch it together!

Have someone screen share & watch the movie together!

Alternative

Watch the same movie on a separate device while you video/voice-call! See, 'Apps to Keep Us Connected' section for various apps.

5. Play a Team Trivia Game ... VIRTUALLY!

This game does require you to purchase it, however, I do recommend it as I have had lots of fun! There are various games available and party packs! Have a person screen share the game.

This is traditionally used as a study app and can be a live played game, quizzing one another on premade quizzes or creating your own!

You can play solo or play with up to 6 people using your cell phones. You do need to screen share.

Typically a game to quiz your knowledge, why not quiz your friend's knowledge? There are many pre-made quizzes and you can also create your fun, you can get creative!

6. Reminisce on Memories Together

Examples
- Share old photos with family a friends
- Make a slideshow video of a memorable time or trip
- Video chat and screen share
- If you do not have a video chat, send an album of
photos to the other person and go through them
  together, explaining each one
- Call and pick different trips to talk about, asking
questions such as; what was your favorite part of the
trip? Would you go back? What was your favorite thing
  you ate on that trip?

7. Play the Gratitude Game

Game Instructions:
Going back and forth, name things you are grateful for. For example; “I am grateful for my house,” “I am grateful for my friends and family,” “I am grateful for the endless amount of resources and knowledge online.”

This game is great as it can be played in person or over the phone/video call. Personally, I find that this game puts me in a better mood by recognizing all thing things to be grateful in life and I find a better connection with the people I am sharing with.

Bonus!

8. Apps to Play with Friends (Near or Afar)

In a time of uncertainty, let's support one another by staying connected and keeping our community.
